Since the news broke early this morning that an Air France plane bound for Paris from Brazil with 228 people aboard is missing, a lot more is known but many questions remain. We've followed the developments in this post, so you might want to go there if you're just hearing the news.
Or, here's a quick recap:
— The Airbus A330 took off from Rio around 6 p.m. ET.
— Authorities say the jet flew through some turbulence, perhaps while it was still off the coast of Brazil.
— According to NPR's Eleanor Beardsley, "some sort of automatic message" was sent from the jet, indicating "an electrical short-circuit." That message was sent around 10 p.m. ET.
— The flight was supposed to have landed in Paris around 5:15 a.m. ET. It does not have enough fuel to still be in the air, authorities say.
— While the Brazilian Air Force is searching, officials say there's a chance the plane went down closer to the coast of West Africa.
Update at 12:40 p.m. ET: Air France says there is "no hope" for the missing plane.
Earlier today at Charles-de-Gaulle airport outside Paris — where the plane had been headed — police evacuated Terminal 2E.
