White House Calls Ahmadinejad Iran's 'Elected Leader'

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is the "elected leader" of Iran, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said today.

Since Iran's disputed June 12 presidential election, as Reuters notes, "the White House has been careful not to comment on the legitimacy of the Iranian election and has condemned the government for its crackdown on opposition demonstrators."

Ahmadinejad is due to be sworn in to his second term tomorrow. Opponents, who say the election was rigged in his favor, plan more protests.
