Home prices in the U.S. have now edged up for five straight months, one widely watched index shows.

Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller Indexes, released this hour, signals that both its "10-City and 20-City composites posted their fifth consecutive monthly increase" in September, David Blitzer, chairman of the Index Committee at Standard & Poor's, said in a statement issued with the report.

Still, the gain from August was slight and home prices remain lower than they were a year ago.

The other major economic news of the morning: The Bureau of Economic Analysis says gross domestic product grew at a 2.8% annual rate in the third quarter — less than its previous estimate of 3.5% growth.
