Tennis star Serena Williams has been fined a record $82,500 for the profanity-laced tirade she directed at an official during this year's U.S. Open.

What's more, she's on probation for two years and the fine will go up to $175,000 if she's guilty of another such "major offense" in 2010 or 2011.

Back in September, we asked if Serena should have been suspended from playing for at least a while, and as of this morning two-thirds of those who responded said yes.

She did eventually apologize.

Update at 11:58 p.m. ET. While the Associated Press interpreted the Grand Slam Committee's actions as imposing an $82,500 fine that could go up to $175,000 if Serena is guilty of another major offense in the next to years, the official statement from the committee says that he is:

Hereby fined $175,000 ... which will be reduced to $82,500 if no further Grand Slam Major Offense conviction occurs through and including 2011.
