Russia and the U.S. are "quite close to an agreement" that would replace the 1991 Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, President Barack Obama told reporters in Copenhagen a short time ago.

According to the media "pool report" filed by Linda Feldmann of the Christian Science Monitor, Obama emerged from a meeting with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and said they had made "excellent progress" on a new START treaty.

Feldmann also reports that Medvedev called Obama an "effective partner" and said there are just "technical details" to work out on the arms treaty.

The Russian president also said, in English, "Merry Christmas and Happy New Year."
