Roy Disney, nephew of the legendary Walt and a force of his own at the company that still bears their name, has died, the Los Angeles Times is reporting.

He was 79 and had been battling cancer. The Times says his passing was announced by Clifford Miller, "a spokesman for Disney's company Shamrock Holdings."

Back in 2004, Roy Disney led a shareholders revolt that forced then-CEO Michael Eisner from his job. Ironically, as the Times reminds us, Roy Disney had led a revolt that put Eisner in the job.

Update at 2:42 p.m. ET. NBC Los Angeles notes that "Disney was a longtime senior executive for The Walt Disney Company, which his father Roy Oliver Disney and his uncle Walt Disney founded. ... He is perhaps best known for organizing the ousting of two top Disney executives: first, Ron Miller in 1984, and then Michael Eisner in 2005 which led to the company's successful revival in animation."
