Jeff Zeleny of the New York Times describes the new, Salahi-proofed operation the White House is running for the holiday Christmas parties designed to keep party crashers from ever again waltzing freely into the White House.
Not only were names checked twice against the guest list, so was photo ID. White House staffers accompanied the Secret Service agents at the entry points, which wasn't the case when the uninvited Salahis entered. And Social Secretary Desiree Rogers eyeballed the guests as they entered.
An excerpt from his post on the NYT's The Caucus:
Before stepping foot into the White House, the visitors' names were checked twice: First, by an administration aide; second, by a Secret Service officer.
As guests proceeded inside the southeast gate to the White House, they were asked to show photo identification at two separate checkpoints. Along the way, several employees from the social secretary's office and other areas of the administration were on hand, in case any stray guests turned up.
Perhaps one of the biggest changes greeted visitors when they approached the East Colonnade, where Desiree Rogers, the White House social secretary, stood and welcomed guests. An identification badge hung around her neck, like the rest of the White House staff, as she extended her hand to guests.
"Welcome to the White House — on behalf of the Obamas," Ms. Rogers said with a smile.
