Pro basketball player Javaris Crittenton of the Washington Wizards pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor gun possession charge in federal court today in Washington, D.C. He'll serve a year's probation. It's the latest episode stemming from a bizarre event last December in the Wizards' locker room. Crittenton and Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas had quarreled over cards on a team flight; the argument ended up with both players threatening each other and then bringing unloaded guns into the locker room D.C.'s Verizon Center. Arenas has admitted his guilt and will be sentenced March 26th for carrying a pistol in D.C. without a license. Arenas was also suspended indefinitely without pay from the NBA by Commissioner David Stern for making fun of the incident before a game against Philadelphia.
There's been a lot of back and forth about whether both players received appropriate punishment and whether the Wizards can void their contracts. For an interesting case of what-if, take a look at law professor Michael McCann's Sports Illustrated column from earlier this month.
