Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is canceling the rest of her Asian trip and returning to Washington to manage the State Department's response to the Haiti earthquake.

NPR's Michelle Keleman reported the following for the network's newscast:

Secretary Clinton said the earthquake that struck Haiti this week was a devastating blow to the Haitian people. The UN also suffered, as she put it, grievous losses when its headquarters collapsed.

President Obama has promised an all-out U.S. rescue mission. U.S. rescue teams are now on the ground, with more to come. Secretary Clinton says the U.S. is also trying to set up a communications capability for the Haitian government.

She was speaking in Hawaii and was due to fly to Papua, New Guinea, New Zealand and Australia. But she said she decided to cancel the rest of her trip and return to Washington to deal with the immediate and long-term consequences of the earthquake in Haiti.

Update at 8:00 pm ET — Defense Secretary Robert Gates has canceled plans to visit Australia for talks with his counterpart to manage the Pentagon's efforts to rescue Haitians affected by the earthquake.
