At the Lincoln Memorial in D.C. this morning.
The forecasters, unfortunately, were right:
A major snowstorm socked the Midwest and took square aim at the mid-Atlantic states ... where it was expected to intensify and dump more than a foot of snow on top of the nearly 3 feet already on the ground in many areas. (Associated Press)
Just check out these reports, from west to east:
— Chicago Tribune: "The snowstorm that pounded the region starting early Tuesday has moved east, over Lake Michigan and to Northwest Indiana. 'We still have some cleanup to to do, but we're on it,' said Illinois Department of Transportation acting dispatch supervisor George Williams. 'We're just playing catchup.' "
— Cincinnati Enquirer: "Snow forecasts were pretty accurate Tuesday in Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky, as nearly every corner of the region saw between 4-5 inches of snow fall throughout the day. If meteorologists' predictions are right for Wednesday, we could be in for another 1-3 inches by day's end."
— Washington Post: "It started with around 2 to 5 inches of snow yesterday evening. Then, the late evening and overnight brought a period of sleet and freezing rain. Now, the entire metro area is changing back to snow and should stay that way through much of today. All this would be trouble enough on top of the 1.5 to nearly 3 feet of snow over the weekend. But add increasingly strong and gusty winds, and you have a perfect recipe for impassable streets, limited transit and power failures."
— Philadelphia Inquirer: "BLIZZARD WARNING ISSUED. A mix of main, sleet and snow is currently falling as the first of two storms to hit the region moves out of and the second storm — a potentially explosive nor'easter — gathers force off the Delmarva Peninusla."
— The New York Times: "A severe snowstorm swept from the Midwest into major East Coast cities Wednesday morning, forcing school and office closures and grounding hundreds of flights across the vital Northeast corridor for the second time in less than a week."
— Boston Globe: "A major snowstorm is expected to batter the area today, closing down schools, causing snow emergencies in communities, and possibly making a nightmare of the evening commute. The storm is expected to bring 6 to 9 inches of snow to the Boston area, but the heaviest snowfall is expected to hit the interior of Southeastern Massachusetts, where some areas will get over a foot, said National Weather Service meteorologist Bill Simpson."
Stay safe, everyone.
