Some numbers make you stop.
Like this one at Huffington Post: "15% of Americans have interrupted sex to answer a cell phone call."
The Huffington headline makes it sound like that's a lot — "Americans Admit Interrupting Sex To Answer Cell Phones." And at first blush (pun intended), that does seem like a sign that quite a few folks are obsessed with their cell phones — or are at least more interested in who's calling than who's ... well, you get the point.
But way back in 2005 (an eternity ago in the age of the cell phone), Ad Age wrote that "14% of the world's cell phone users report that they have stopped in the middle of a sex act to answer a ringing wireless device." The number came from BBDO Europe.
And in 2006, Fortune said the number should be "one in five", or 20%.
So it seems like somewhere in the 15% to 20% range has been the interruptus sweet spot, so to speak, for quite a while.
Cell phones have become more and more a part of our lives. Isn't it at least a bit encouraging that we're not getting worse about having to take those calls?
This, of course, is a totally unscientific version of the same intimate inquiry. And sometimes you're waiting for a call that's just too important to ignore, no matter what you're doing.
