The story of three young Americans who have been held in an Iranian prison since last July has sparked much discussion. Sarah Shourd, 31, her boyfriend, 27-year-old Shane Bauer and their friend Josh Fattal, also 27, were hiking in Iraq's northern Kurdish region when they crossed an unmarked border into Iran and were arrested. They're accused of spying. They're also, clearly, caught in the ongoing tensions between Iran and the U.S.
Any time there's a post about this story, it sparks comments about the actions of Iranian authorities and the mistakes made by the hikers.
Today's news — that the hikers' mothers had a chance to see their children and that the young Americans had a chance to talk with reporters — at least gives us a glimpse into how Shourd, Bauer and Fattal are doing.
Yes, the hikers and their moms surely had to be careful about what they were saying. But this latest news also reminds us that people who love them are going through an incredibly difficult time.
