In the 1950s and 1960s it was the supposed missile gap with the Soviets that worried those in the center-right politically. Today, it's apparently a laugh gap that's got them concerned.

For those who believe American comedy is a bastion of leftists, a new entertainment channel, RightNetwork, aims to change that.

News of the network first hit earlier this year with the announcement that the network was scheduled to launch this summer.

The network's website doesn't provide information on when exactly it will go live or which cable companies etc will carry it. Comcast knocked down early rumors that it would carry the new channel, according to news reports.

Anyway, NPR's Elizabeth Blair reports on the effort for All Things Considered on Tuesday. She reports that the network so far just has three shows, including a a stand-up comedy series called Right 2 Laugh and a reality show titled Running.

Elizabeth's report has a quote from comedian Evan Sayet who produces the stand-up comedy show who says:

Really it's just a safe haven for people who have values more like the heartland who don't want to hear their president called a Nazi, who don't want to hear that Christians are all stupid.

Her report also includes a clip of a comedian's joke from Right 2 Laugh.

I did not vote for Obama but I did order one of those Obama coins that they advertise on TV. Because as any collector will tell you a coin is worth a lot more when there's an obvious mistake on it. (Audience laughter.)

Actor Kelsey Grammer has gotten a lot of attention, not all good, for promoting the network. His participation caused some cognitive dissonance for many since around the same time he was promoting the new network, Grammer was appearing on stage as a gay character in La Cage aux Follies.
