The head of the Xinhua News Agency — China's domestic news service, run by the country's communist party — has gone missing.
According to The Daily Telegraph, "Wan Wuyi, 58, disappeared after being sent to complete a training course at Oxford University."
The Internet is awash with rumors, that Wan has defected, that he fled to escape a corruption investigation.
Xinhua's London bureau chief told The Daily Telegraph that the scuttlebutt is baseless.
"This is totally wrong," he said. "It is a rumour."
Mr Wan is at my home. He has been ill for 50 days and the doctors say he is recovering but only slowly. He cannot travel at this time.
The Sydney Morning Herald reports "Mr Wan's wife is said to have emigrated to Britain already."
