Maman Isabelle, whom NPR's Ofeibea Quist-Arcton describes as "a real character and a tough, tough cookie," sells plantains from her dugout on the Congo River.

The barges that head up and down the Congo River are floating supermarkets. You can purchase the fresh produce and ingredients barge residents need to prepare their meals. And the villagers who provide the foodstuffs for passengers and crew are also looking for goods — so it's give and take and sometimes barter trade.

NPR's Ofeibea Quist-Arcton describes a barge "supermarket."
