Tropical Storm Hermine makes landfall, as seen from space.
The National Hurricane Center says Tropical Storm Hermine's top winds are now 50 miles per hour as it lumbers north through central Texas. Up to eight inches of rain are expected before Hermine degrades to a tropical depression and the storm's remnants sweep north into Oklahoma tomorrow.
COLORADO FIREFIGHTERS LOSE HOMES
Wildfires in Boulder County destroyed dozens of homes, including those belonging to four firefighters. The Four Mile Canyon fire has burned 3,500 acres in rugged terrain, feeding on fallen trees and brush. Boulder County says its emergency alert system failed for about two hours Monday afternoon and it's not clear if all warnings to flee were received. People are evacuating and no one's been hurt.
AND IN CONCLUSION...
'It's going to be ugly, but it will be beautiful in its ugliness', said Australian independent lawmaker, Rob Oakeshott. After a rambling, 17 minute speech, he finally announced he'll back Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard, who'll now form the country's thinnest ever minority government, two weeks after inconclusive elections. Oakeshott and two other independents helped put her over the top. Oakeshott's musing drew instant online criticism, including from Therese Rein, wife of former PM Kevin Rudd, who tweeted 'Aaaaarghhh!!!!' And Channel Nine's political editor Laurie Oakes tweeted: 'The way Oakeshott is going we could be here for another fortnight.'
THE RUNNING OF THE SHEEP - NOT
Move over Pamplona: the annual Great Montana Sheep Drive is held every Labor Day weekend in Reed Point, except, of course, when they don't run. About 350 sheep didn't like the looks of the crowd, so they gathered at the back of a nearby saloon and bolted back out of town the way they came. I can't lay my hands on this year's video but it's hilarious enough when things go well, so here's last year:
Bonus quote: 'Unlike the bulls, they will not try to hurt you. They are stupid and will try to run over you, though.' Event announcer Diana Hahn.
