Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas speak after they made statements about the resumption of direct peace talks in the East Room of the White House in Washington.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is traveling to Egypt today, for the continuation of direct peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority. Those talks began earlier this month, in Washington.
From Sharm el-Sheikh, Clinton plans to visit Jerusalem, Ramallah, and Amman.
According to NPR's Deborah Amos, violence along the tense border with Gaza has escalated. Palestinian militants fired rockets into Israel after Israeli tank fire killed three Palestinians.
"The rocket attacks have been the heaviest in weeks," she reports. "Six over the past 24 hours."
Amos spoke with Avi Issacharoff, who covers Palestinian issues for Haaretz. He said that Hamas, the militant Palestinian group that rules the Gaza Strip, is sending a message:
You cannot continue to negotiate over a peace solution or a solution over the Palestinian Territories without us, or by ignoring us. It won't solve this problem.
Israeli and U.S. negotiators refused to talk to Hamas, which they consider a terrorist organization.
