The fire broke out in San Miguel prison, according to Reuters, just south of Santiago. It's not clear if all the victims are inmates. The BBC says the blaze may have been set by fighting gang members, who set fire to mattresses. The facility is supposed to house 700 people but 1,900 are actually incarcerated there. The Chilean paper, La Tercera, reports that at first, prison guards wouldn't let firefighters into the facility.
