The USGS says an earthquake shook eastern Myanmar, the country also known as Burma and had a powerful magnitude of 6.8 (revised down from 7.0). The tremor was in a small stretch of the Myanmar countryside that's close to the borders of China, Laos and Thailand. The epicenter was about 70 miles north of the Thai city, Chiang Rai.

There are no reports of injuries or damage.

The USGS says the tremor was about six miles deep in the earth. But it was strong enough that people reported buildings swayed in Bangkok, Thailand, which is 500 miles south on the Gulf of Thailand. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says the quake was too far inland and there's no risk of a tsunami.
