Unemployment News Coming; River Flooding In Memphis

The Labor Department releases its snapshot on April's unemployment rate at 8:30 a.m. ET. The Wall Street Journal says thousands of new jobs were probably created last month but it's unclear if the U.S. labor market will improve.

Floodwaters are lapping the streets of downtown Memphis, says Reuters. The swollen Mississippi river is forcing evacuations in the suburbs. Heavy rain and winter snow melt have poured into the river and its tributaries and flowed downstream; flooding is expected in the next few days in Mississippi and Louisiana.

The U.S. has apparently carried out a new drone attack in Pakistan, the first since Osama bin Laden was killed in Abbottabad. The AP says as many as 10 people were killed in North Waziristan.

A British judge ruled the 52 people killed in suicide bombings in 2005 died because of terrorism, according to the AP. The judge ruled British agencies didn't contribute to the deaths, though relatives of some victims believed British intelligence officials failed to prevent the attacks and emergency responders were too slow.

Tony-award winning playwright and stage director Arthur Laurents has died. He wrote the books for West Side Story and Gypsy, and later wrote the films The Way We Were and The Turning Point. The Los Angeles Times says Laurents was believed to be 93.
