In New York City, the evacuation of hundreds of people from a World Financial Center building ended with an all-clear around midday Thursday, after police determined that an object detected in an X-ray scan was actually "a grenade-like novelty item mounted on a plaque with a sign: 'Complaint Dept. Pull Pin,' reports the New York Daily News, quoting NYPD spokesman and deputy commissioner Paul Browne.
The fake grenade was reportedly detected in a package in the downtown New York building's mail system just before 11 a.m., EDT. Many employees were evacuated within 30 minutes, according to reports.
Images posted to social media from the scene showed hundreds of office workers standing outside 2 World Financial Center, before the all-clear was announced. NBC New York reports that the building has 44 stories and 2.7 million square feet.
