News is the News Today in New Orleans

The location of the Historic New Orleans Collection is the 1792 Merieult House, one of very few surviving buildings from the Spanish Colonial period in New Orleans.

Today, NPR announced that we're joining with Member Station WWNO and their licensee, the University of New Orleans (UNO), to support the launch of a new local journalism partnership.

On Monday, WWNO moved to an all-news format, introducing several NPR produced and distributed shows to the community, including Tell Me More with Michel Martin and On Point from WBUR.

Now, WWNO is seizing the opportunity to build a multiplatform local newsroom from the ground up. This will mean more in-depth, local reporting on vital community issues on a new website – NewOrleansReporter.org – and on radio.

What's most astounding is the support behind this effort. UNO and WWNO are launching this expanded newsroom in partnership with NPR, and with support from many New Orleans business and civic groups.

NPR is providing consultation around technology infrastructure and online revenue generation, as well as training to support the rapid deployment of a multimedia newsroom. Initial community engagement and fundraising support will come from Greater New Orleans Inc., the Urban League of Greater New Orleans, the Business Council of New Orleans and the River Region, and the Greater New Orleans Foundation. All partners joined together this morning for an announcement on the University's campus.

WWNO aspires to create a strong, sustainable model for nonprofit, multimedia journalism that will serve the greater New Orleans area as an open source of trusted news and information.

We're eager to see what's ahead.
