Behind The Stories

NPR In The News: Big Idea Edition

All summer long in the series "Joe's Big Idea", NPR science correspondent Joe Palca explores inspiration and how scientists' thoughts evolve into a discovery. An accompanying contest also asked young people, "What's Your Big Idea?"

Last week, 17-year-old Catherine Wong was named winner as her cellphone medical test was a big hit with our judges. She devised a cheap, simple way of diagnosing heart problems over a mobile phone, benefiting people and countries with limited or no access to health care.

Her achievement has unsurprisingly received quite a bit of attention in the press, including NBC News' Future Tech, Mashable, Philadelphia Magazine, and Participant Media's TakePart.

Congratulations to Catherine, and we look forward to hearing more about her in the future.
