StateImpact Pennsylvania: Shale-Play Interactive

StoryCorps and NPR: "StoryCorps 9/11" special on Morning Edition, We Remember: StoryCorps Stories from 9/11 and more.

NPR is receiving one award for its coverage surrounding the ongoing conflict in Syria, led by international correspondents Kelly McEvers, based in Beirut, and Deb Amos, who has spent three decades covering the region. On frequent trips into Syria and from its borders, the two captured the pace and gravity of the growing uprising and brought context to a rapidly changing story. From interviews with government officials, to a report on children singing the praises of Syrian President Assad in neighboring Lebanon, their reporting illuminated the numerous sectarian factions ensnared in the conflict and provided clarity for millions of listeners.

StateImpact Pennsylvania, one of eight partnerships between NPR and Member stations dedicated to public policy reporting on-air and online, is being recognized for outstanding coverage of energy issues. Reporters Scott Detrow of WITF Harrisburg and Susan Phillips of WHYY Philadelphia have focused on the fiscal, environmental and social impact of gas drilling on the state's energy economy. With the series Shale Play, StateImpact reported on the impacts of drilling in state forests, residential water quality, and public health. They created a data-driven visual tracking thousands of gas wells and their environmental impact. And that's the primary impetus behind StateImpact: accessible information on the policies that affect people's lives.

StateImpact Pennsylvania developed this interactive map to show which natural gas operators are drilling, and where; find active wells in a county or municipality; and see whether the drillers have been cited for violating state environmental regulations. i i

NPR shares a duPont Award with StoryCorps, which is being honored for its innovative and authentic remembrances of the human toll of 9/11, produced and broadcast for the 10th anniversary of the attacks. "We Remember: StoryCorps Stories from 9/11," an hour-long special co-produced by StoryCorps and NPR and hosted by Audie Cornish, took an intimate look at lives forever changed by the attacks by reconnecting with original interviewees, who spoke about loved ones, incredible loss and how they are doing ten years later.
