Mike Doughty, former frontman of the one-of-a-kind early-'90s group Soul Coughing, returns to WXPN's studios for Wednesday's episode of World Cafe. This visit is a little different from his previous appearances: Since going solo, it's the first time he's out performing the music he wrote and recorded with his old band. Soul Coughing saw moderate commercial success based on a mix of rock, jazz, electronic music and Doughty's slacker-poet lyrics, which helped differentiate the group from the rest of the alternative rock that dominated the era.

In 2000, Soul Coughing split up and Doughty embarked on a solo career. Since then, he's overcome drug addiction, continued touring and released new music and literature.

Doughty's most recent album, titled after the record's 13-song tracklist, is a set of revamped Soul Coughing songs. During this session, he talks with host David Dye about why his years with the band were some of his darkest moments in life.
