Morning Edition, January 29, 2004 - In Nashville, where new musical talent arrives at the bus station every day, singer-songwriter Mindy Smith has earned a reputation as one of the city's most promising young artists.

The buzz has traveled far beyond Tennessee -- last year Smith appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and she's drawn favorable comparisons to established artists like Alison Krauss, Shawn Colvin and Patty Griffin.

After country star Dolly Parton heard an early demo, she recruited the Long Island-born Smith, 31, for the 2003 Parton tribute album Just Because I'm a Woman. Parton says Smith's version of "Jolene" is the best she's ever heard.

Parton continues to informally advise Smith as the singer's career gets a boost from the release of her debut CD, One More Moment, this January.

NPR's Bob Edwards recently spoke with Smith about the CD, her talks with Parton and some of the inspirations behind her spare, emotional material. He also got her to sing a few songs from One More Moment, accompanied by mandolin player Lex Price.
