Why we're tracking this person: When Sen. John McCain chose then-Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to be his running mate on the Republican presidential ticket in 2008, she burst onto the national scene. Since then, Palin has stepped down as governor, but become an influential force within both the Republican Party and the Tea Party movement. Palin's words — "death panels," "lock and load," "refudiate" — can drive the national debate.
