Dorgan's Departure Hands Seat To GOP

Incumbent Byron Dorgan (D), first elected in 1986, is retiring. Had he decided to stay and run again, he would have had a competitive match against John Hoeven, the state's popular GOP governor. With Dorgan retiring, Hoeven is a certain Republican pickup in a state that hasn't elected a Republican to the Senate since 1980. The Democratic nominee is state Sen. Tracy Potter. -Ken Rudin
