      A Battle In Bellwether Ohio

Incumbent George Voinovich (R), first elected in 1998, is retiring. The GOP's pick here is Rob Portman, a former congressman who later served as budget director and then trade representative in the Bush administration. It is Portman's service under President Bush -- and the memories of the faltering economy that accompanied his presidency -- that convinces Democrats Portman can be defeated. But Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher (D) has to answer for the poor economy in Ohio, where he serves under Gov. Ted Strickland, his fellow Democrat. -Ken Rudin
