Murray Faces Fight In Evergreen State

Patty Murray (D), first elected in 1992, is seeking a fourth term. Like her fellow Democratic senator Barbara Boxer, Murray -- also from the Class of 1992 -- was not thought to be in any difficulty heading into this cycle. But a late decision by Dino Rossi, who lost the 2004 gubernatorial race by the incredibly close margin of 129 votes, to challenge her changed the dynamics of the race. In the August primary, in which all candidates, regardless of party, ran on the same ballot, Murray finished considerably ahead of Rossi, even though the total of Republican votes narrowly surpassed the total of Democratic votes. -Ken Rudin
