GOP Has Edge In Surprising Contest

Both parties find themselves with unexpected nominees to replace incumbent Bob Riley (R), who was first elected in 2002 and is term-limited. On the Democratic side, Rep. Artur Davis thought he was cruising towards his party's nomination in his bid to become Alabama's first black governor. But many African-American voters felt he adopted a strategy of trying to win over white voters while taking black voters for granted. He lost badly to state Agriculture Commissioner Ron Sparks. For the Republicans, Bradley Byrne, former chancellor of the state's community colleges, finished first in the initial June 1 primary. But he was relentlessly attacked in the runoff by a media blitz paid for by the Alabama Education Association. That, and the fact that Byrne was perceived as the "status quo" choice of the establishment, enabled little-known state Rep. Robert Bentley to win the runoff on July 13. -Ken Rudin
