A Rematch For The Md. Governor's Seat

Martin O'Malley (D), elected in 2006, is seeking a second term. The governor he unseated four years ago, Bob Ehrlich, is back for the rematch. Ehrlich's first test -- running in the Sept. 14 primary against a politically unknown businessman (Brian Murphy) who won the surprise endorsement of Sarah Palin -- went smoothly; he triumphed in a landslide. When Erhlich won the governorship in 2002, he became the first Republican to do so since Spiro Agnew in 1966. But he was voted out of office after just one term. And while the political tide has turned since their first contest, when O'Malley was the mayor of Baltimore, it is still a decidedly Democratic state. Both candidates are selling their respective four years as governor.

The state holds its primary Sept. 14. Incumbent Martin O'Malley (D), elected in 2006, is seeking a second term. His likely GOP opponent is ex-Gov. Bob Ehrlich, ousted by O'Malley four years ago. But Brian Murphy, a politically unknown businessman, has the backing of Sarah Palin. -Ken Rudin
