GOP May Take Back Governor's Seat

Jim Doyle (D), first elected in 2002, is retiring. Doyle fell victim to what has endangered many governors in the Midwest: the poor economy, the loss of jobs and the subsequent drop in his own popularity. Republicans, excited about recapturing the governorship after eight years, nonetheless had to endure a divisive primary between Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker and former Rep. Mark Neumann, who last ran for office in 1998 when he narrowly lost to Sen. Russ Feingold. Walker, the choice of the party establishment, won the primary, and he appears to have a good shot at succeeding Doyle.

Milwaukee is Democratic territory -- the mayor, former Rep. Tom Barrett, is the Democratic nominee for governor. But he seems to be trailing, and Democrats are taking notice; President Obama visited in late September and Vice President Biden is coming in early October. -Ken Rudin
