Freudenthal's Departure Gives Republicans An Opening
Dave Freudenthal (D), first elected in 2002, is term limited. He has been a popular governor in this overwhelmingly Republican state, and with him leaving, the GOP is assured of winning. Wyoming actually has a propensity for electing Democrats to the governorship, unlike the Senate; three of the last four governors have been Democrats. But Matt Mead, the former U.S. attorney who won a tough GOP primary contest, is a prohibitive favorite over Leslie Petersen, the former state Democratic chair. -Ken Rudin
