SXSW: Live From Austin

Yuck, Live In Concert: SXSW 2011

March 16, 2011 Yuck reflects the frayed noise and hooky, guitar-driven melodies of '90s rock, even though its members, at 20, are too young to have experienced it firsthand.

Yuck doesn't worry much about first impressions: Short of calling a band "We're Terrible," it's hard to imagine a name riper for dismissal. On stage, though, this is a remarkably assured young riser. Standing out for reasons far greater than just drummer Jonny Rogoff's heroically gigantic Afro, Yuck captures the frayed noise and hooky, guitar-driven melodies of '90s rock, even though its members, at 20, are too young to have experienced it firsthand.

With only a self-titled full-length, an EP and a handful of singles in its arsenal, Yuck doesn't have a hard time hitting all of its recorded highlights — from a blistering opener in "Holing Out" to the tremendously epic set-closer "Rubber" — in this set from Stubb's in Austin, Texas, recorded live as part of the South by Southwest music festival. In fact, it's a testament to Yuck that, at this point in its members' careers, it's already got enough highlights to stuff a set this long.

Band Personnel: Daniel Blumberg - Singer and Guitarist; Max Bloom - Guitarist; Jonny Rogoff - Drummer; Mariko Doi - Bassist
