Dessa: Twin Cities Hip-Hop, Sparkling With Energy

April 28, 2011Nervous, jittery and sparkling with energy, Minneapolis' Dessa stopped by The Current's studios to record a session with the help of local luminaries Jeremy Messersmith and Aby Wolf. Hear the full session and watch a performance of "The Chaconne."

The day Dessa came in for her session at The Current was the day her debut full-length, A Badly Broken Code, was released. And she was nervous in a charming way, a little jittery and sparking with energy. The storytelling in "The Chaconne" is quite visual; as you listen, you can see the man in the song who is in love with his music above all else. When coupled with the layers of textured harmonies between Dessa and her backup singers — local luminaries Jeremy Messersmith and Aby Wolf — "The Chaconne" takes on new life in live performance.

The song was recently featured on our station's latest compilation, Local Current, Vol. 1, along side Trampled By Turtles, Peter Wolf Crier and many more.
