Kathy Mattea On Mountain Stage

April 15, 2013 Making her 16th appearance on Mountain Stage, the singer-songwriter plays selections from her latest album, Calling Me Home, which examines her native Appalachia.

Kathy Mattea makes her 16th appearance on Mountain Stage, recorded before a sold-out audience in Charleston, W.Va. A native of the Charleston suburb of Cross Lanes, Mattea made her mark in Nashville, Tenn., as a leader rather than a follower. She first appeared on Mountain Stage in 1986, right before her cover of "Love at the Five and Dime" became a breakout hit. Mainstream success continued, and she earned a slew of awards and accolades throughout the 1990s, all the while making regular trips to Scotland to explore the connections between country music and traditional Scottish folk.

Beginning in 2008, Mattea threw herself into American roots music with her album Coal, inspired in part by the Sago mine disaster. Her latest release, Calling Me Home, further explores music of her native Appalachia. Here, Mattea is joined by her own band — featuring guitarist Bill Cooley, her sideman of over 20 years.

Set List
  • "Gone, Gonna Rise Again"
  • "Hello My Name Is Coal"
  • "West Virginia Mine Disaster"
  • "Woodthrush's Song"
  • "Agate Hill"
  • "Coal Tattoo"
  • "Calling Me Home"
