There's nothing pretty about Girl Band; in fact, the Dublin group plays some of the most abrasive pop songs you're likely to hear. But it hasn't always been that way: Singer Dara Kiely and guitarist Alan Duggan played together in more conventional indie-rock bands before hitting upon their aggressive sound.
With bassist Daniel Fox and drummer Adam Faulkner, the all-male Girl Band heaps loads of distortion over driving beats. The result sounds at times like chainsaws attacking a DJ rig, with Kiely's Mark E. Smith-style deadpan barely audible above it all — until he screams. On an early Saturday afternoon at Kex Hostel in Reykjavik during Iceland Airwaves, recorded for KEXP's broadcast, a full house yelled back.
