In For Emma, Forever Ago, Bon Iver's Justin Vernon sings in a heartbreaking falsetto. Vernon wrote the album's songs while living in a remote cabin one winter in northwestern Wisconsin, where he'd gone to exorcise some inner demons. For Emma, Forever Ago perfectly captures the isolation and chilly heartache of the period in which it's recorded. Hear a concert recorded live at the Parish in Austin, Tex., on March 13, 2008.
Hear the other bands from this concert: Vampire Weekend, Yeasayer, A.A. Bondy, Jens Lekman, Shout Out Louds.
