Be creative and don’t let obstacles stop you. One of my best learning experiences was when I had to come up with a creative solution to gather original audio of my grandfather in New Orleans while over a thousand miles away in DC. I consulted with my mentor and current NPR reporters, asking their advice, and we were able to find an Intern Edition Alum living in New Orleans to help gather the audio.

So I didn’t come to NPR expecting to go cover stories on the field, or produce an entire segment on a show — how could I do that if I had ZERO radio experience? And I did expect to do some typical intern tasks, such as making copies, opening mail and going on coffee runs. But I also came willing to learn a lot and wanting to get some meaningful experience from the whole thing.

People can walk through a salad bar and make something that is just perfect for them, and the next can make something completely different. Modern Journalism is not so much different from this.
