Hi everyone:
I wrote a note someplace else on the site but never mind.
Intern Edition didn’t start this way. Alex Cohen, formerly of NPR’s Day To Day was the first Executive Producer. Neal Carruth now of ATC was one of the first hosts. Eve Troeh, Audie Cornish, Addie Goss, Amy Blaszyk, Shannon Mullen, Ann Heppermann, Ambar Espinoza, Martina Castro, Jenny Asaranow, Jolie Myers, Susan Leem, Rita Garcia, Leah Scarpelli, Marina Giovanelli, Lindsay Trotty, Arwa Gunja and Ms. Richards who wrote before me, all spent time wrestling with the fundamentals of doing a story for Intern Edition. They are now working throughout the public radio system.
The success of this program, I think, follows one guiding principle: Interns at NPR are given a lot of freedom to create something from nothing and the ideas are your own. I’m still waiting to hear of another media company that does this. Intern Edition is unique. It should stay that way and I really hope it does. Now, it’s a well-oiled machine and as long as the right leadership is chosen, it will continue to be so.
It’s tough out here, you know this already. But, there are people in the public radio system and other forms of media who are open to giving you all a chance. If there is anything I can do to help you get to wherever it is you want to go…just send me an e-mail. It does not have to be “news.” I travel a lot (you all connected to me on FB know this) and I meet a lot of very interesting people with great ideas for whatever the next big thing is going to be. You will get there.
Adelante!
Doug
