High-Income Filers Give More
Americans with incomes over $200,000 account for more than a third of the nation's charitable contributions while making up less than 10 percent of itemizing tax filers, according to an NPR analysis of Internal Revenue Service data. President Obama has proposed reducing the value of tax deductions for charitable giving among those earning more than $250,000 a year.
President Obama's plan to cap high earners' tax deductions for charitable giving appears to be on life support. Critics say the plan -- intended to help pay for a health care overhaul -- will reduce giving to groups just when their services are most needed.
