Los Angeles Secession Ballot Measure
"Voters in Los Angeles will decide on Tuesday whether to split their city into as many as three smaller ones. The San Fernando Valley and Hollywood, both currently part of Los Angeles, would become independent if the ballot measures pass," says NPR's Andy Bowers. "Some Valley residents have complained for decades that their area is still separate from and neglected by the rest of Los Angeles.... Hollywood, although much smaller, has similar complaints" However, Bowers says, "the secession drives have lost momentum in recent weeks ... Recent polls show both Valley and Hollywood measures losing badly citywide, and that would be enough to scuttle secession. To pass, each measure must win both a majority in the breakaway region and in L.A. as a whole."
