April 9, 2003 -- Andy Nelson, staff photographer for The Christian Science Monitor, is traveling with the 1st Marine Division, which has been moving deeper into the center of Baghdad.

Nelson's photos speak of the rapid advance of American troops into the heart of Saddam Hussein's Ba'ath Party power center -- and the chaos that often follows in the vacuum left when authority figures and structures are removed.
