Rebuilding New Orleans: Home Uptown Broadmoor Carrp;;tpm Metairie Mid-City French Quarter Algiers Bywater Lower Ninth Ward Eastern New Orleans Gentilly Lakeview

Broadmoor

Neighborhood Description: Before it was developed, Broadmoor was a large marsh area and a fishing spot for Uptowners. It later grew into a neighborhood of low- and middle-income residents living in Spanish and mission revival homes.

Damage After Katrina: Much of the housing in Broadmoor, a low-lying area, is built several feet off the ground, which spared some homes. Even so, flooding was widespread.

State of Reconstruction: "It was early on considered for green space," says Michael Perlstein, a former New Orleans Times-Picayune staff writer who now teaches at Loyola University. "That brought out people in force," who thwarted efforts to raze the area, despite flooding of 4 to 7 feet.
