Neighborhood Description: Metairie, part of Jefferson Parish, is the largest unincorporated community in the Greater New Orleans metropolitan area. The busy Veterans Highway is Metairie's main commercial thoroughfare.

Damage After Katrina: About three-quarters of the area was flooded, by some estimates. A number of homes took on several feet of water.

State of Reconstruction: Homeowners quickly set out to rebuild in Old Metairie, a small suburb with expensive homes, which was badly damaged by a canal breach.
