Uptown

Neighborhood Description: Uptown includes neighborhoods between the French Quarter and the Jefferson Parish line. The residents of Uptown include people from a wide range of economic groups and racial and ethnic groups. It includes the historic Garden District.

Damage After Katrina: Much of Uptown was spared from major flooding. That said, the area nearest to Lake Pontachartrain (north of St. Charles Avenue) did see significant flood damage. In this map from the New Orleans Times-Picayune you can see how some areas were flooded, while others stayed dry. (Note: Adobe Acrobat is required to view the map.)

State of Reconstruction: Residents have largely returned to the area, and many restaurants and shops, such as those along Magazine Street, have opened. Tourists will note that the famous St. Charles street car line is not yet operating.
