The individual competition came down to a three-way jumpoff -- and Jeroen Dubbeldam of the Netherlands prevailed Sunday. Teammate Albert Voorn was second, and Khaled Aleid of Saudi Arabia settled for bronze.
Dutch Rider Wins Individual Dressage
Riders from the Netherlands and Germany refused to give the rest of the world a chance in individual dressage competition Saturday.
Winner Anky van Grunsven of the Netherlands won the event aboard Rusty. But the next three places went to Germany's Isabell Werth (silver), Ulla Salzgeber (bronze) and Nadine Capellmann. Dutch riders Coby van Baalen and Ellen Bontje finished fifth and sixth.
U.S. Grabs Medal in Team Dressage
An impressive performance by four German riders captured the team dressage gold medal Wednesday in the Grand Prix event. Isabell Werth, Nadine Capellmann, Ulla Salzgeber and Alexandra Simons de Ridder put up a total of 5,632 points. That nosed out the Dutch team of Ellen Bontje, Anky van Grunsven, Arjen Teeuwissen and Coby van Baalen. The bronze medal went to the United States foursome of Susan Blinks, Robert Dover, Guenter Seidel and Christine Traurig.
Australian Team Wins Three-Day Event
The homestanding Aussies took gold in the team competition of the three-day equestrian event at aptly named Horsely Park. Australian teammates Phillip Dutton, Andrew Hoy, Stuart Tinney and Matt Ryan held off a challenge from British riders Ian Stark, Jeanette Brakewell, Pippa Funnell and Leslie Law. The U.S. team captured the bronze behind a Virginia foursome of Nina Fout, Karen O'Connor, David O'Connor and Linden Wiesman.
