The Lord of the Rings is the first in an ambitious trilogy of films based on the works of J.R.R. Tolkien -- the second film in the series is already being shot in New Zealand. It earned nominations in three of the most prestigious catagories: best picture, director and supporting actor.
A Beautiful Mind, based on the true story of math genius John Nash, and Moulin Rouge, a genre-busting musical set in Paris in 1899, both earned eight nominations each to tie for second place.
An epic fantasy adventure like Lord of the Rings has never won best picture at the Oscars, even though the film with the most nominations often wins the top prize. Many of the categories Lord of the Rings was nominated for were for technical achievements such as visual effects, sound, costume design and editing.
It's Russell Crowe's third best-actor nomination in three years, setting him up for potential back-to-back Oscars following his victory last year for Gladiator -- his first nomination came for his work in the movie The Insider.
