Political Songs & Satire

In this election year it seemed a good idea to put out a call for music about politics. What we wanted was satire; what we got were earnest and passionate songs that mostly bashed the incumbent president.

Below you will find fairly well-known artists singing songs about war, the candidates and the voters' dilemma: who to chose in 2004.

We've also included a special feature on music from the candidates. Intern Jenny Asarnow offers a sample of the songs used to pump up crowds at political rallies by President George W. Bush and the Democratic nominee, Sen. John Kerry.

Listen to All Songs ConsideredListen to Jenny Asarnow's report on music and the presidential campaigns.

You'll find political songs and satire from unknown artists on Open Mic.

Tom Waits sings a new song with an old message. It is a tune about a soldier, his loneliness, his dilemma and his hopes in times of war.

Seattle label Barsuk records and John Flansburgh of They Might Be Giants organized this compilation of political songs, featuring artists like David Byrne and REM. They say 100 percent of the money raised with this CD will go to "progressive organizations working to involve more Americans in our political process."
